What qualities should a school counselor have
This week, in honor of national school counseling week (february 7 though 11), education world asked school counselors to reflect on what makes them effective. This is especially true of child psychologists, whose interventions in time often end up saving a child's life. The first thing that comes to mind is that school counselors must be able to listen.Counselors need several qualities, including people smarts, math abilities, observational skills, a good thinking cap and compassion.School counselors are also skilled in advocacy, always looking for opportunities to enhance student success, and consistently voicing the concerns of underrepresented student groups.
Assist with college applications, jobs and scholarships.A good counselor must balance empathy with accountability. The skills that a counselor must possess have to address a range of issues encompassing relationship, health, child psychology, career choices, and many more.Because without motivation none can get rid of frustration.A school counselor must be able to listen to and help students from all walks of life.
There are six personal characteristics that are critical for good counselors and should be improved upon continually.Leave gaps in their day for unscheduled needs.Regularly emailing with families and staff, creating class schedules, and delivering creative and meaningful lessons are among the basic skills school counselors should possess.A good counselor must also hold clients accountable for their actions. So it is an important quality which should have build up in a good counselor.
